Fidel Castro steps down as president of Cuba

Raul Fernandez is a professor of Chicano/Latino studies at UC Irvine and studies the economic and cultural transactions between the United States and Latin America, including Cuba. He is the director of the UC-Cuba Academic Initiative, a multi-campus research group committed to strengthening the scholarly connection between the United States and Cuba in chemistry, history, social sciences, humanities, music, art and other areas. He is also the author of From Afro-Cuban Rhythms to Latin Jazz and has traveled to Cuba as a member of UC-Cuba, where he met with University of Havana faculty members.
